Twelve-year-old Wendy is not at all happy that she has to spend her summer vacation with her parents at her grandma Herta's run-down riding stables. Wendy has been afraid of horses ever since a riding accident. But then she meets the pretty mare Dixie, who has run away from the butcher. Slowly, a deep friendship develops between the horse and the girl, and while Wendy does everything she can to save Dixie, she also manages to overcome her fear.

As Dusty and the team practice, Dusty deals with the fears that come with her mother fighting in Afghanistan.

However, Jožka wins everything there is to win despite various ups and downs – he stands up to bullying in the youth home, an arrogant tutor, human weaklings, manages to study well even at a school that he doesn't enjoy and does sports. He also gains the respect of his classmates. Real jockeys also star in the film. It also features the birth and death of a horse. The scene where Jožka's father saves a horse from a burning truck is dramatic. The scenes with carrier pigeons are touching.

The flea chops down strands of the dog's hair to use as "logs" with which to build a cabin, unaware that the dog's coat is the sacred territory of a tribe of Indian fleas, who declare war on the interlopers. The Indians capture and are about to burn the flea and the horsefly when the dog jolts in pain from the fire. The flea and the horsefly free themselves and flee the Indians through the hairs on the dog's carcass.
